Learn how to make this easy versatile condiment that can be used in various ways, similar to how regular jams or spreads are used. The addition of matcha gives it a vibrant green color and a distinctive earthy and slightly bitter flavor that’s characteristic of green tea. The recipe can be made vegan-friendly and dairy-free.
What is matcha milk jam/spread?
Matcha milk jam, also known as matcha milk spread, is a creamy and flavorful spread made by combining matcha (green tea powder), milk, sugar, and sometimes butter. It’s a versatile condiment that can be used in various ways like how you would a fruit jam or nut butter spread. It’s a contemporary fusion of ingredients and flavors that have emerged with the popularity of matcha and the creativity of modern culinary enthusiasts.
Why is this easy?
Most matcha milk jam/spread recipes require cooking down heavy cream and milk until they are thickened, which may take about 15-20 minutes of time. This easy version requires no cooking at all.
What does it taste like
It has a distinct flavor of matcha, with slight bitterness from matcha which is balanced by the creamy, milky, sweet condensed milk
Ingredients and substitutions
1. Condensed milk
For this easy version, you have to use condensed milk. This recipe is easy because it requires no cooking and therefore, condensed milk is used. You can try vegan condensed milk if dairy is not your friend
2. Matcha powder
I highly recommend using ceremonial-grade matcha powder. It makes a huge difference in terms of quality and the color
3. Butter
Butter is used to add flavor and also to firm up the spread, so I do not recommend omitting this. You can, however, use coconut oil for a vegan version
4. Sugar (as needed)
Depending on how sweet of a tooth you have, add this if you want it sweeter, or don’t add it if you think it’s sweet enough since we are using sweetened condensed milk
5. Pinch of salt
This really brings out the flavor. All you need is a small pinch. So, don’t omit this
Easy Matcha Milk Jam/Spread
Ingredients
- 6 g matcha powder
- 15 g hot water
- 70 g sweetened condensed milk
- Sugar as needed
- 30 g unsalted butter
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Place butter in a heat-proof bowl and microwave on high power for about 30 seconds and check, if it's not completely melted yet, stir and see if it melts. If not, you can add another 10 seconds or so. Let it cool down for about 10 minutes or so
- Combine matcha powder with hot water and whisk to combine into a smooth thick paste. Add melted butter, condensed milk, and pinch of salt and whisk. It seems like the two just won't combine at first, but just keep whisking and eventually it combines homogenously. Have a taste and see if you need to add more sugar to your sweetness preference or not
- Transfer to a clean jar. Close the lid and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to let it thicken up
- Store in the fridge for up to one week
