This past week, hell broke loose. I think that was my exact sentence over the phone to my husband who was gone on a business trip. I’m not sure about you, but both of my kids just have to get sick at the same time when I’m alone at home and this wasn’t the first time. And oh… Kayla came for a visit. Not that sweet girl Kayla whom my daughter loves to play with. Snow storm Kayla. Yup….me + snow blower. Looking at the bright side..at least we have a snow blower!!
5-year old had a cold and cough, but no fever. My 2-year old is a sweet mama boy who loves to cuddle and will give lots of kisses. When he is well that is. With a fever of 101-104 for 5 days, coughed his lungs out, lots of vomits, nosebleed, and later we found out…ear infection. You DON’T WANT to be anywhere near this snappy boy. But, did I look like someone who had a choice ? Every single thing I said, or did, or did not do would trigger major meltdowns x 10. Then he would scream and cry, then threw up again and so this vicious cycle just went on for few days.
Sure..you get the picture now. NOT pretty days. One thing that I’m really grateful for is both kids still take naps. That one hour to one hour an half is like seeing water in a desert. I’m serious!! This is the time that I try to catch up with what I need/want to do. My daughter and I love to color together. She could sit down and color for a long time. Lately, she has started to draw something on her own after seeing characters or images from books or movies. That’s the cutest thing to see. I colored, doodled, and painted a lot when I was a little kid too. So, I thought…you know I haven’t done any of those for ages. Adult coloring if you know what I mean and I just got a nice set of Prismacolor NuPastel from Michaels. I cook to unwind too if it’s not obvious already. So, put the two together, I was bombarded by ideas!
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and I decided I wanted to create something playful and somehow still artsy with this “Color your breakfast and eat it too” theme in mind. I started by placing some real kitchenware and food on top of the paper. Just to give me the feel of the sizes and where I wanted to color around the real objects. Then I roughly sketched with a pencil and started to color them.
Things started to come together when I incorporated real food. With just the coloring alone it seemed like something was missing and with just the food alone, it’s nothing unusual. The 2 dimensions and 3 dimensions give that “surreal” feeling. I love how they complement each other.
What’s for breakfast ? Wheat toast with slices of avocado and sprinkles of Japanese Furikake on top, imaginary egg, strawberries, oranges and some real cheerios, raspberries, oranges, blueberries, and milk. Accompanied by some beautiful flowers 😉
It got even more fun now that I could pretend to pour that milk (yes..those are real drops of milk), cut the egg, and eat the cereal 🙂 Who says only kids can pretend play ?

I seriously had so much fun doing this project for myself. I’m by no means an artist and you don’t need to be an artist to pick up those coloring pencils, sticks, or markers. This really gave me the feeling of satisfaction and put a huge smile on my face. No matter how crazy my life is or going to be, I keep telling myself I need to have a “me” time. I feel like I’m a much better person too and I can respond better to my kids when I have taken care of myself. My daughter saw the drawings when she woke up and she said “Mommy, can I play with you ?”
The next time you have craft activities or projects in mind, make sure to check out Michaels coupons for additional savings, in newspapers and online! I actually saved quite a bit by using Michaels’ coupons. You can even print out free coloring pages from Michael’s website.
