Learn how to make Japanese-style buttery and milky biscuit sticks coated with chocolates the easy way. They are fun to make and kids to adults love these popular snack sticks.
I don’t know any kids who grew up in Asia that did not know Pocky 🙂 I grew up with Pocky and LOVE them a lot! They were a once-a-week treat for us. Every weekend my parent let us have one box of pocky. The flavor I knew back then was milk chocolate, white chocolate, and strawberry chocolate. Nowadays you can find so many different flavors for Pocky, especially in Asia. From matcha, cookies and cream, banana, crunchy strawberries, almond crunch, melon, etc.
I let my kids try Pocky and there’s no turning back. When I brought my kids to Asian grocery stores here in the U.S., my kids would beg me for Pocky too LOL! I’m happy that Costco sells Pocky now! (not sponsored!)
What is Pocky anyway?
Pocky sticks are a popular Japanese snack consisting of thin, elongated, biscuit-like sticks coated in chocolate, strawberry, or other flavored coatings. They are typically sold in small, individually wrapped packages and are a common snack in Japan and other parts of Asia.
Easy recipe for the biscuits
I’ve tried several recipes for the biscuit sticks. While most of them are good, they require rolling out the dough and then cut into individual sticks. I really like the recipe I’m sharing here because you just need to pipe out the cookie batter and bake, which I feel like much easier to manage for most people. Most importantly, the biscuits taste good too.
How to make Pocky at home
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C) for a conventional oven. 330 F (165 C) for a convection oven. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper
2. Combine all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.
3. Add the wet ingredients and stir to combine. The consistency is like a thick batter
4. Transfer this to a piping bag or a sturdy plastic bag. Snip off the tip.
5. Start piping the batter out in a straight line, about 6-7 inches long, about 1 inch apart
6. Put baking sheet in the middle rack and bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool on the pan completely. They are fragile when they just come out from the oven, so try not to move them or touch them
7. I melt the chocolate by placing a bowl of hot water underneath the bowl of the chocolate and stir until melts. White chocolate tend to seize when the overheated, so make sure you don’t overheat it. If the chocolate starts to harden, you can warm it up a bit to melt it back. I keep them over a bowl of warm water while dipping the biscuits into the chocolate
8. Dip the biscuit stick into the melted chocolate and immediately sprinkle with sugar, decorated with chocolate pieces or candies.
9. Set them on a parchment-lined baking sheet to let the chocolate harden
